In this economy, many companies are prone to cut, cut, cut… everything that’s not nailed down. As budget planning rolls around, many people will be totally budget driven, working from fear and not good business sense.
While this may seem understandable, overlooking why you’re in business, whether you’re small, medium, super-sized, or for- or non-profit, is not. You cannot afford to lose sight of your vision and mission, as they determine strategy, which, in turn, determines decision-making.
Most likely, if you have a strategic plan, it’s hidden in a drawer somewhere. Others simply have never taken the time to actually put their hopes and dreams, goals and objectives on paper. Let’s face it, if it’s not in black and white or color, you haven’t done it!
(Whack on the knuckles time!) Without a vision, goals, etc., how can you possibly put together a meaningful, forward moving budget to get you where you want to go? Many of you will say, “Shoot, I’m doing ok without a plan. It’s just a waste of time.” But, are you really? Is ok good? Are you truly moving forward and making exciting, sustainable progress? Or, are you caught up in the Groundhog Day scenario? That is painfully dealing with the same mind numbing, stressful operational headaches that drag you down day after day and month after month.
Bottom line, strategic plans must come first in order to build solid, meaningful budgets.Don’t let fear make you cut everything to the quick. More than likely, you’ll end up dead in the water without the resources — human or otherwise – to stay alive and thrive. Instead, strategically plan to deal with those challenges and opportunities and allocate the funds according to your priorities. With creative planning, the only cuts you’ll need to make are those line items that don’t get you where you want to go!
